7 decisions to make before starting a web project

Clarify goals, content, technology and measurement before development starts.

1–2: Objective and audience

First define the business outcome the website should support, then the primary audience expected to reach it. These two decisions shape page structure, message hierarchy and the main call to action.

3–5: Content, scope and ownership

Document the required pages, who will prepare copy and visuals, and which features belong in the first release. Without clear content ownership and approvals, design and development schedules quickly become uncertain.

6–7: Technology and measurement

Content management needs, integrations, security and maintenance expectations should guide the technology choice. Before launch, also define conversion events, core performance indicators and ownership of ongoing improvement.
